In the religion of the Aztec civilization, the human soul was not purely human. At least a portion belonged to the animal god that helped create it. Just as each of the anthropomorphic gods had an animal double, every newborn child was endowed with a nahualli or ‘shadow soul’.
Traditionally, the nahualli teaches the youth its secrets, skills and abilities.
If the nahualli was known for its strength, like the jaguar,
the youth becomes strong. If the nahualli was known for its ferocity, like
the hummingbird, the youth becomes fierce. Additionally, the nahualli offers
the youth its protection, both in the physical realm and in the realm of
the dead. In return for these favors, the human agrees to protect the nahualli,
as much as he or she is able, and never to take the life of any member of
its species – not for food, nor for ritual, nor for sport.
Unlike other animal oracles that are general collections of animal lore, The Nahualli Animal Oracle is based on an authentic ceremony of the Aztec religion. We have incorporated authentic Aztec numerology, religious symbolism, and mythology in its 40 cards.
Our goal for this book is threefold: To improve our understanding, respect and appreciation for animals as unique emotional and spiritual individuals; to honor the Aztec civilization for its many accomplishments; and to resurrect an authentic oracle of the Aztec religion as an instrument for obtaining wisdom, guidance, and insight into everyday affairs.
